With the rise of social media usage in the US over the past decade, substantial problems have occurred and can be seen throughout the US population. Social media has, for example, affected multi-tasking skills abilities and attention spans. A study on the effects of negative social media messages on attention to television news broadcasts. The results showed that (“negative information presented on a second screen draws more attention to itself than similar positive information”) (Kätsyri et al. 18).
This shows that there is a clear influence by social media over the attention span and it drew the main point of focus in the subjects of the study. This can also be seen with the rise of health issues that have come about because of heavy usage of technology and social media. Looking down at phones all day can lead to back problems and vision issues because of the improper sitting stance and the glare of the screen. The use of these devices can affect our eyes in countless ways and overall is damaging to one’s health. While social media allows us to talk to others, it can also limit time spent outdoors or outside of the house. This cuts down the body’s intake of Vitamin C, which could lead to increased susceptibility to illnesses. The impact of social media on our health is therefore very clear and can be seen now with social media raging across the nation.
